Green School

St. Columba’s G.N.S. has been taking part in the An Taisce Green School’s Programme for a number of years. We have been very successful to date in running the first three themes of the programme : Litter & Waste, Energy and Water.

This year our school is starting on the 4th theme, Travel. The travel theme will run over two years. Our Green Committee, which is composed of representatives from each class, teachers and the caretaker, is already up and running and meeting fortnightly. They are a very enthustiastic bunch this year, with lots of energy and full of ideas!

The aim of the travel programme is to promote sustainable travel to school, such as walking, cycling, park and stride, car pooling or taking public transport.Raising awareness of road safety and sustainable travel also play a large part  in the Travel theme. Travelling to school should be an enjoyable, safe and healthy experience for us all. It should also be a great opportunity for children to interact with their  peers, learn about their local environment and get exercise. Sustainable travel will also lower carbon emissions and reduce road traffic congestion in Douglas.

In the first term with the help of Ellen from An Taisce,  members of the green committee carried out a “walkability audit” where we checked out four different walking routes from thr school to assess them in terms of safety. Each group came back with some recommendations but in general the feedback was possitive.

“Travel” is a challenging programme and one that will really involve you as parents. To help our school Ellen Murphy, the An TAisce Travel\ Development Officer for the Cork Region and Councillor David Boyle, will be working closely with us. They will provide support in getting the travel scheme started. We organised a special “Walk to School Day” on Friday 5th. of March 2010. It is our hope that families who enjoyed walking to school on this day, will consider doing it more often, maybe even once a week! In the future we are also hoping to set up a “walking bus” to our school.

In the meantime you can find out more information about sustainable travel in the travel secyion on the Green-schools website :
